India imported a total 23.31 million tonnes of coal in September, rising 12.49% on the year and 14.8% month on month, according to data released by Iman resources.
In the month, non-coking coal imports in the country increased 23.18% from a year ago and 32.98% from August to 16.33 million tonnes, while coking coal intakes reached 4.08 million tonnes, down 13.21% year on year and 21.58% on the month.
India imported 1.39 million tonnes of PCI coal during the same period, declining 14.52% from the year prior but up 26.01% from a month earlier. Anthracite imports decreased 31.38% year on year and 54.23% month on month to 94,300 tonnes.
In September, Indonesia was the largest non-coking coal supplier to India at 10.39 million tonnes, up 22.03% YoY and 28.75% MoM. Non-coking coal intakes from South Africa came in at 3.05 million tonnes, surging 126.81% YoY and 61.77% MoM, data showed. The country imported 2.30 million tonnes of coking coal from Australia over the month, falling 35.11% YoY and 18.8% MoM; inflows from the U.S. were 858,600 tonnes, up 56.7% YoY yet down 11.83% MoM.
In the first nine months of this year, India‘s accumulated imports of non-coking coal reached 126 million tonnes and that of coking coal stood at 43.47 million tonnes. PCI coal imports totaled 13.22 million tonnes.
