Global crude steel production fell 1.5% from a year ago to 149 million tonnes in September, showed data from the World Steel Association (WSA). In September, the top ten crude steel producers were China, India, Japan, the U.S., Russia, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran.
China produced 82.1 million tonnes of crude steel in the month, down 5.6% year on year, and India’s output rose 18.2% from a year ago to 11.6 million tonnes. Japan saw a year-on-year fall of 1.7% in its crude steel production to 7 million tonnes in September. The output of the U.S. increased by 2.6% on the year to 6.7 million tonnes. During the month, crude steel output in Russia was estimated to increase 8.4% from a year ago to 6.2 million tonnes. Crude steel output of South Korea rose 18.2% from the previous year to 5.5 million tonnes, while that of Germany climbed 2.1% to 2.9 million tonnes, data showed.
Crude steel production in Turkey increased 8.4% year on year to 2.9 million tonnes, and that of Brazil declined 5.6% to 2.6 million tonnes, while that of Iran dropped 12.7% on the year to 2.4 million tonnes.
In January-September, crude steel output worldwide witnessed a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.1% to 1.41 billion tonnes. During the period, China, India, Japan, the U.S. and Russia respectively produced 795 million tonnes (+1.7% YoY), 104 million tonnes (+11.6% YoY), 65.4 million tonnes (-3.6% YoY), 60.6 million tonnes (-1.4% YoY) and 57.1 million tonnes (+4.8% YoY). Crude steel production in South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran in first nine months this year totaled 50.4 million tonnes (-0.4% YoY), 27.2 million tonnes (-3.6% YoY), 24.5 million tonnes (-10.1% YoY), 24 million tonnes (-8% YoY) and 22.1 million tonnes (-0.6% YoY), respectively.
