The latest data from the General Administration of Customs shows that in October 2023, China imported 26.49 million tons of thermal coal (including lignite, other bituminous coal and other coal, the same below), a year-on-year increase of 19.01% and a month-on-month decrease of 12.28%.
Thermal coal imports in October were US$2.023 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 14.78% and a month-on-month decrease of 11.59%. Based on this, the average thermal coal import price in October was US$76.39/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 28.39% and a month-on-month increase of 0.79%.
From January to October 2023, a total of 287 million tons of thermal coal were imported, an increase of 118 million tons or 69.91% year-on-year; the cumulative amount was US$26.788 billion, a year-on-year increase of 38.19%.
In October, China imported 12.496 million tons of lignite, a year-on-year increase of 2.37% and a month-on-month decrease of 3.29%.
In October, the import value of lignite was US$715 million, a year-on-year decrease of 32.13% and a month-on-month decrease of 2.09%. From this, it is estimated that the average lignite import price for that month was US$57.2/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 33.7% and a month-on-month increase of 1.24%.
From January to October 2023, a total of 133 million tons of lignite was imported, a year-on-year increase of 30.4406 million tons, an increase of 29.57%; the import value was US$9.632 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 1.45%.
